Freeze Dryer Tray Area Comparison
This tool compares how much tray surface each machine really has: tray count, tray size and total tray area, where the manufacturer publishes the numbers. The formula is tray length x tray width x number of trays, and the result is always labeled CALCULATED TRAY AREA because it is derived from published figures, not claimed by the maker.

Pounds per Batch and Tray Area Are Different Numbers
A batch weight says how much wet food the machine can handle; tray area says how much surface the food physically has to spread across. Thin, light products meet the surface limit first: fruit slices, candy, herbs and powders are often limited more by tray area than by wet weight. Wet, dense products meet the weight or depth limit first: purees and liquids are limited by tray depth and surface, because a deep layer dries unevenly even on a large tray.
The Usable Area Is Less Than the Printed Size
Tray dimensions are usually the outer size. Food should stay inside the usable surface, away from the rim, and loading that respects even thickness uses less than the full area in practice. Use the printed dimensions for comparisons, then plan your own loading with the tray load planner.
