When you weigh a sealed package, the scale shows food plus packaging. This tool subtracts the measured weights of the bag, oxygen absorber, label and any other packaging from the total package weight so you get the net freeze-dried food weight inside.

What the Result Means
The net weight is the amount of food you actually own inside that package: the number to use for portions, rehydration estimates, pricing per gram and inventory. If you know the package came sealed from a freeze-drying run, this is also one way to check the run's dry yield: net food weight divided by the fresh weight loaded gives the dry yield percentage for that package.
The Formula
- Net Food Weight = Total Package Weight − Bag Weight − Oxygen Absorber Weight − Label Weight − Other Packaging Weight
Important Limitations
- Every subtractor must be measured accurately. A bag "about 14 grams" guessed instead of weighed can throw the net weight off by several percent.
- If the net weight is zero or negative, the packaging weights add up to more than the total: check the readings, because a real sealed package always contains some food.
- A desiccant pouch or insert that you did not enter as "other packaging" will be counted as food. Add every separate piece you can weigh.
- Net food weight is not a moisture content or a quality measure: it tells you how much food is there, not how dry it is.
