Net Package Weight & Packaging

Package Quantity Calculator

This tool answers "how many packages will this batch fill?" It divides your total freeze-dried weight by the target net weight per package to show full packages and the remaining product, and an optional handling loss percentage accounts for breakage, powder left in equipment and spillage.

What This Tool Does

It splits a total dry weight into full packages of a target net size and reports the remainder, with an optional handling loss applied to the available weight.

For breakage, powder left in equipment and spillage. No loss is applied unless you enter a number.

What the Result Means

Full packages is the number of packages you can fill completely at the target net weight; the remainder is what is left over after the last full package, useful for deciding whether to make a smaller final package, fold the remainder into another batch, or adjust the target size. When you enter a handling loss, the count is based on the weight that survives, which is the honest way to plan packaging for fragile products and powders.

The Formula

  • Weight Available = Total Weight × (1 − Loss % ÷ 100), or Total Weight when no loss is entered
  • Full Packages = Weight Available ÷ Target Net Weight (rounded down to whole packages)
  • Remaining = Weight Available − Full Packages × Target Net Weight

Important Limitations

  • Loss is an estimate you enter: no loss is assumed unless you add one, and a guessed loss percentage is still a guess.
  • Real package fill weights drift around the target; weighing each package and topping up as needed is normal production practice.
  • The count assumes clean filling with no rework or rejected packages. If your process loses packages to breakage or rejects, account for that separately from the handling loss percentage.
