Portioning

Portioning Freeze-Dried Food

Portioning is where freeze-dried food becomes practical: one person, a family, a hiker, a pet or a retail customer each needs different sizes, labels and water estimates. This page explains the planning for each scenario and connects every step to the Tools calculators so the portion sizes are honest math, not guesses.

General Recipe General guidance; no tested portion standards.

Individual meals

Single-serve pouches sized to one person: weigh each pouch, label the dry weight and water estimate, and keep the number of servings honest on the label.

Family meals

Scale from a single serving by multiplying the dry weight, not the water: starches absorb eagerly, so write the water estimate per serving and multiply with a note to add gradually.

Hiking meals

Portion by appetite and trip days, pre-weigh at home, and double-bag powder-based meals. One pouch per hiker per meal keeps trail math to zero.

Pet meals

Follow the producer's instructions for pet food portions. For toppers and treats, keep amounts small and veterinarian-approved; this site does not formulate pet portions.

Retail products

Retail portioning is a costing decision: net weight per package, package quantity from total dry weight, and margin from the pricing tools.

The Tools That Do the Math

Every portioning question maps to a calculator. All run client-side, and every number they produce is an estimate from the assumptions you enter.
