Pet Food Powder
Pet food powder is ground freeze-dried meat or poultry used as a supplemental flavor enhancer on top of a pet's usual food. This page follows the powder template with the pet-food honesty rules in force: nothing here is a complete or balanced formulation, and no veterinary or nutritional-adequacy claims are made.
Best Starting Material
Fully dry, cooked, trimmed, single-ingredient meat or poultry that the pet already tolerates. No spices, salt, garlic or onion are added: the powder is the plain dried meat.
Preparation
- Start with fully dry, plain cooked meat or poultry, crumbled into small bits.
- Grind in small batches with short pulses, exactly as for human-food meat powder.
- Keep the powder single-ingredient so you know exactly what your pet is getting.
Grinding
Grind in short pulses and sift, as with any meat powder; keep the grinder clean so no human-food flavors or residues cross into the pet powder.
Sifting
Sift through a fine mesh strainer and re-grind coarse bits until the powder is consistent and clump-free.
Storage
Seal tightly and store cool and dark, and because meat fat can oxidize, rotate the powder sooner than you would a fruit powder. Any rancid or off smell means discard.
Uses
- Sprinkle a small amount over the pet's usual complete food as a flavor enhancer.
- Use as a supplement or treat addition in moderation, as your veterinarian directs.
- Mix sparingly into a rehydrated meal to encourage picky eaters.
